Sad news arrived yesterday: English playwright Tom Stoppard has died. He is well known in the literary and theatrical world, and in the film industry as well. People from the arts will no doubt say many good things about him. I want to say something that may not be well known, but seems important to me.
Tom Stoppard supported the democratic movement in the USSR. In 1977 he travelled to Moscow, met with dissidents, and even tried to visit an inmate in a psychiatric hospital in Leningrad. He was one of the organizers and an active participant of the Committee for the Protection of Victims of Punitive Psychiatry in the Soviet Union. He was a sincere friend of freedom. He defended persecuted dissidents in every way he could. When I was in prison, he came to my defence. I always remember this and am thankful to him for his participation in the opposition to Soviet totalitarianism. Such people in the West were few even then, and now have become yet fewer.

The unending and fruitless peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine are needed only by politicians, experts and the press. For Trump, this is a favorite show called “What a wonderful peacemaker I am;” for Putin – a well-known operational game; for journalists – their daily bread; for experts and analysts – a pretext to speak wisely and show their erudition. An attempt to use diplomatic tools during war is nonsense, a false medicine for the ears of the trusting public. Putin clearly shows that he needs war, not peace; the West just pretends not to understand this. Trump, contrary to the obvious, stubbornly insists that Putin really wants peace, wants to trade with America and does not want new victims. European politicians, denying Ukraine real military support, spill promises, hopes, and worthless offers that lead to nothing. At the same time, Ukraine bleeds under the sympathetic gazes of its Western partners.

Freedom for political prisoners!
10TH DECEMBER. MOSCOW. PUSHKIN SQUARE. 7PM
In terms of the number of political prisoners, Russia today is on a par with Andropov’s time, and in terms of the lengths of the prison terms being given and the reasons for the repression, is on a par with Stalin’s. Supporting political prisoners is our civic duty.
In the photo – hello from the USSR.

The traditional demonstration to show solidarity with political prisoners took place today, 10 December, on Pushkin Square in Moscow. At exactly 7 p.m., we took off our hats to honour the memory of those who died and to remember those who are currently in camps and prisons. The police who were at the square did not intervene.
There were few of us, but we were in the right place at the right time.
