Russian history of the previous and current century has been marked by immaturity: the inability (and lack of need) to see that the world is large and complex, and that every “I” is inextricably linked to this great and complex world (and the world is connected with each). And that any attempt to stop noticing this big and complex world, to cut oneself off from it for the sake of some plan or other to save oneself, to cease to pay it any attention, will only lead to a tragic split between oneself and the reality which necessarily exists around one.
If I am blind to the scale, complexity, and tragedy of what is happening around me, then I may think that everyone is in debt to me, and I am in debt to no one. And the main goal, although I won’t admit it, is just to be left alone, in a very false peace… I will suffer for my salvation, I will perfect myself, I will carry out those “small deeds”, but my refrain will remain – that the large, complex and tragic world “must” leave me alone, and someone else, in whom I will see the memory of my parents, grandparents, school teachers, “must” provide me with the “simple” but essential things: predictability and preferably an unshakable material basis (even if modest). … So that they would keep on pestering me, and I would “go to work” and live a fragmentary life …
We were mistaken when we thought that the Communist utopia had been defeated by the desire for development and responsibility, that globalism had prevailed over self-isolation and suspicion, adulthood over infantilism. It was the spirit of fragmentation that defeated Communism… It proved more steadfast… Some people did see things from a global perspective and wanted a global world – you can list their names… But in historical terms, these people have had a very tough time. The infantile spirit of fragmentation – energetic, destructive, egocentric, short-sighted – opposed them, gradually fought against them, spurred them on at times but then swept them out of the way, conquering the world… In insignificant matters, its impact was burdensome, but, where more important issues were at stake, it would prove extremely dangerous.
Русская история прошлого и нынешнего века прошла под знаком инфантильности: неспособности (и отсутствия потребности) видеть, что мир большой и сложный, и что каждый “я” связан неразрывно с этим большим и сложным миром (и мир связан с каждым), и что любая попытка перестать замечать этот большой и сложный мир, отгородиться от него ради того или другого плана спасения себя, перестать уделять ему всякое внимание – приведет только к трагическому раздвоению между собой и реальностью, которая никуда не денется. Если я не вижу масштаб, сложность и трагичность происходящего вокруг, то – мне все должны, а я никому, и основная цель, хотя я в этом не признаюсь – чтобы меня просто оставили в покое, в очень ложном покое… Буду страдать во спасение, буду совершенствоваться, буду осуществлять те или другие “малые дела”, но мой рефрен останется – что большой, сложный и трагичный мир “обязан” меня оставить в покое, а кто-то в нем, в ком я увижу воспоминание о родителях, бабушках-дедушках, школьных учителях – “обязан” обеспечить мне “простоту”, предсказуемость и желательно непоколебимый материальный базис (пусть и махонький). … Чтобы ко мне приставали, а я буду “ходить на работу” и жить фрагментарно…
Когда мы думали, что коммунистическая утопия была побеждена желанием развития, ответственностью, что глобальность взяла верх над самоизоляцией и подозрительностью, взрослость над инфантилизмом – мы ошибались: коммунизм победила фрагментарность… Она оказалась более непоколебимой… Некоторые видели глобально и хотели глобального – можно перечислять имена… Но им пришлось исторически крайне туго: с ними исподволь боролась, подстегивала, а потом сметала с пути – инфантильная фрагментарность: стеничная, пробойная, эгоцентричная, недалекая… Завоевывающая мир… В безобидных случаях тягостная, в более острых – очень опасная.
