Some Reflections
by Viktor Kogan-Yasny
There are people who hate freedom in all its forms, and freedom of choice in particular. For them, any choice is merely between one pole and its opposite; there are no nuanced options in life, and no place in which the consideration of such options could develop. These people are prepared to kill so that others do not have options, and to resolve all questions through pressure, constraint, coercion, pain. For some reason, God tolerates their behaviour, occasionally leaving them genuinely unaware of the fact that they are at war with God himself.
The conflict between people committed to modernisation and people committed to archaism (as we might call them) is spreading with enormous intensity, and has the capacity to bring the whole of world civilisation to the point of collapse. It is very serious. Nor is it by any means simply a question of particular personalities making specific decisions. This is a gruelling and savage conflict. The ‘Modernisers’ can be short-sighted, mean-spirited, and cynical. The ’Archaists’ are savage and cruel.
Sovereign fundamentalism is an attempt at reconstructing the distant past, a movement backwards. Liberal fundamentalism is an attempt to fit the idea of freedom to current demands. Both are short-sighted and anti-human.
