For three years now we’ve been working in this new format. It would be great if our work were no longer needed and we could move on to something else. But unfortunately, that’s far from the case, and so we’re striving to improve our work the best we can.

Regarding the discussion about how political prisoners should behave:

In my view, it is unethical, and even indecent, to make demands of political prisoners—unless we’re talking about clear, direct, intentional, and voluntary harm caused to others.

It is unethical and unseemly for anyone who is at liberty to impose such expectations, and even the heroic personal history of a person making them can only partially excuse – but not negate – what is unethical and unseemly.

We have finally made our database public – the list of individuals deprived of their freedom for clearly politically motivated and unlawful reasons.

Adding an individual to our list of political prisoners is a lengthy process and often impossible without full knowledge of the key circumstances of a case. However, support is needed for all individuals whose imprisonment involves elements of political motivation and illegality, from the moment they are detained. Many people on the outside want to know about these prisoners, support them more actively, and have the opportunity to choose whom to help. Our database will be useful for this.

We will, of course, continue to improve the way we present the data and hope to publish information about all these prisoners in accessible format on our website, but making this database public is a step in the right direction.
