CSO of the Week: FEM IZBA

On 16 August activists of the feminist movement “FEM IZBA” held a flash mob in Rostov-on-Don as a sign of solidarity with the residents of Belarus who were subjected to violence by law enforcement officers.

On Wednesday, 26 August 2020, Caucasian Knot reported that administrative protocols have been drawn up against 14 Rostov activists for violating the procedure for holding a picket and laying flowers in support of citizens of Belarus. The “Caucasian Knot” has reported that residents of Southern Russia held actions in support of citizens of Belarus. Thus, on August 16, in Volgograd, eight people held solo pickets in solidarity with Belarusian protesters. On the same day, activists of the feminist movement “FEM IZBA” held a flash mob in Rostov-on-Don as a sign of solidarity with the residents of Belarus who were subjected to violence by law enforcers. Most of the passers-by supported the young women; others treated the problem as far-fetched.

According to the website womenplatform.net, Fem Izba is a non-profit public association of feminists of Rostov and the region, a regional cell of the Russian Feminist Association “ONA” with preservation of autonomy. Its aims and objectives are to educate (especially women) on the history of the feminist movement, to organize spaces for women, where they can develop, engage in creativity, communicate and talk about their problems, unite women under the idea of feminism, raise public discussion on women’s issues, to organize safe spaces and psychological support for women and girls. Its main activities are educational lectures, small protests, street actions and street art, media interviews on behalf of the organization, organization of creative spaces and groups of self-consciousness growth.
