Remember the Date: 5 March 1953 – the death of Stalin

Joseph Stalin (born Ioseb Besarionis dzе Jughashvili on 18 December [Old Style 6 December] 1878) died on 5 March 1953 at the Kuntsevo Dacha aged 74 after suffering a stroke. He was given a state funeral with four days of national mourning declared. On 6 March, the coffin with Stalin’s body was put on display at the Hall of Columns in the House of the Unions. On 9 March his body was interred in the Lenin Mausoleum where it remained until 1961 when it was removed on Khrushchev’s orders and placed in the Kremlin wall.
