
On 19 January 2009 human rights lawyer Stanislav Markelov and journalist Anastasia Baburova were shot dead on Moscow’s Prechistenka Street.
An annual march in memory of Stanislav Markelov and Anastasia Baburova is held in Moscow each year on 19 January.
Stanislav Markelov (20 May 1974 – 19 January 2009) was a human rights lawyer who worked on a number of high profile cases, including those of journalists, left-wing political activists and antifascists. Markelov had represented the family of Elza Kungaeva at the trial of colonel Yury Budanov, who was convicted of her kidnapping and murder (see Wikipedia)
Anastasia Baburova (30 November 1983 – 19 January 2009) was a student of journalism at Moscow State University and a journalist for Novaya gazeta. Born in Sevastopol, Ukraine, she was a member of Autonomous Action and investigated the activities of neo-Nazi groups (see Wikipedia).
