Moskalenko, Karinna

Karinna Akopovna Moskalenko is one of Russia’s leading human rights lawyers. She won the first ever case against the Russian Federation at the European Court of Human Rights. She has represented, among others, Mikhail Khodorkovsky and the family of murdered journalist Anna Politkovskaya. Karinna Moskalenko, born in Baku, studied law at Leningrad State University (graduating in 1976) and later specialized in Human Rights at the University of Birmingham in the UK (graduating in 1994). She is the founding director of the International Protection Centre in Moscow that since 1994 has specialized in taking cases to the European Court of Human Rights. In 2010, she was awarded the The Ludovic-Trarieux International Human Rights Prize.
